Very interesting and informative. Too many Americans oversimplify to the point of all history coming down to nothing more than black versus white. In fact, there have been a myriad of cultures intermixing and clashing continually. By and large, Appalachians were fiercely independent and opposed slavery, even in the slave states. West Virginia was created from western Virginia, at the beginning of the civil war, because of it. The confederate army avoided Appalachia because of the open hostility to them by the residents.

"American Nations", a book by Colin Woodard is a wealth of information concerning the various cultures of America.
